Opportunity Belief

Opportunity Belief

During these times of staring at your phone, back up for a breath, then back down at your phone again, I think there’s an opportunity to promote extra knowledge to shy folks or deterrence by uninterested people. What I’m referring to is dealing with rejection before being rejected and at the same time keeping others away without having to say no or be in an uncomfortable situation. Meanwhile you can still use this tool to gather intel for you and set yourself up for success.
This opportunity is a dating app, a dating app that displays the profiles of those also on it within 50 yards from you, within eye contact distance. A dating app that will increase the odds of David that would rather not talk to Ashley because he assumes she has a boyfriend and will reject him. The guy or girl too shy to spark up a conversation and eliminate his or her chances all together.
Current dating apps are outdated and don’t work within eye contact distances, some females are using tinder only as swiping entertainment to see how many matches they can get without following through, and even meeting up is difficult because you have never seen this person before and it can be awkward.  Also, current dating apps have you write paragraphs about yourself like it’s some type of interview; it’s not effective.
In my high school days, you either talked to somebody face to face or were introduced to somebody by a friend or relative then liked each other, all in person-- real spark. This app promotes that. Here is how it would work and the problems it would solve: so, Fred is afraid of rejection and is too shy to speak to Kate, what he doesn’t know is that Kate thinks he’s cute and is single too; Fred doesn’t commit, a lose lose situation for both. In my opportunity belief app, both parties will be able to see each other’s pictures after glazing at one another in person first. However, Fred will have access to fragments of information disclosed by Kate already, increasing his odds of success. For example, single, not interested in anything, or only into carrots.
This opportunity can also solve the problem of certain people who rather not have others approach them for xyz reason, Kate sees Josh has “Married and in love” under his picture, so she stays away from him and keeps looking around. Knowledge is power and this app gives folks more knowledge about this alluring person seating across from them without throwing away their shot.

Iteration

1(Female)

1) Have you ever used a dating app? Nope. I think it’s creepy.

2) Have you ever avoided speaking to somebody you liked, assuming they are already in a relationship? No, I never go after anyone and that would never cross my mind.  What percentage of the time? 100% of the time

3) Do you experience this with everybody you find attractive, what would get you to come forward and spark up a conversation? Yes, if they look available in the moment, and look alone, or, if I’m introduced to them. I don’t really walk up to people.

4) Would knowing if they’re single, and of the same sexual orientation ahead of time, help you be more likely to approach them? I guess, but…. I still won’t.

5) If you were single how would you go about dating, and what would deter you from talking to somebody you find attractive? I would date somebody I already know, what would deter me is if they’re with people or uninterested, the situation must be right. “People” have to talk to me first, they have to make the first move.

6) If there was a dating app that showed you disclosed information by that person you liked sitting across from you would you be interested? No, but it sounds like a really good idea. Would you be more likely to go talk to them? No.   What percentage of the time? 100%

2(Female)

1) Have you ever used a dating app? No.

2) Have you ever avoided speaking to somebody you liked, assuming they are already in a relationship? Yes. What percentage of the time? 60%

3) Do you experience this with everybody you find attractive, what would get you to come forward and spark up a conversation? No, something that I see them doing.

4) Would knowing if they’re single, and of the same sexual orientation ahead of time, help you be more likely to approach them? No. I’m very shy.

5) If you were single how would you go about dating, and what would deter you from talking to somebody you find attractive? Oh God, honestly, I don’t know.

6) If there was a dating app that showed you disclosed information by that person you liked sitting across from you would you be interested? Yes. Would you be more likely to go talk to them? Yes.  What percentage of the time? 55%.

3(Male)

1) Have you ever used a dating app? Yes. A couple one night stands off of those things.

2) Have you ever avoided speaking to somebody you liked, assuming they are already in a relationship? No, I don’t assume until they tell me. What percentage of the time? 100%

3) Do you experience this with everybody you find attractive, what would get you to come forward and spark up a conversation? Idk, hard question, curiosity.

4) Would knowing if they’re single, and of the same sexual orientation ahead of time, help you be more likely to approach them? Yes.

5) If you were single how would you go about dating, and what would deter you from talking to somebody you find attractive? Go to a club a bar or something. A nasty attitude would deter me.

6) If there was a dating app that showed you disclosed information by that person you liked sitting across from you would you be interested? Yes. Would you be more likely to go talk to them? Yes. What percentage of the time? 100%.

Reflection

It was awkward to interview females about their sexuality and attractions towards others. Both interviewees felt dating apps and approaching others was a little creepy, however, this is a small sample and being interviewed doesn’t necessarily mean you will disclose everything. I feel females are going to be more shy than males when it comes to this opportunity belief but they will both benefit from it in the long run. After the interviews and further explanation of the app, they all agreed it would be something helpful and would be interested if it existed.

Summarizing

My opportunity belief is intact, I do however feel like the app would require some adjusting to make it reflect a little of what my small sample of costumers would prefer. However, the trade-off in staying firm and adapting in this case is that this opportunity belief is unique, it need to stay that way to be relevant and maintain my original vision of the app itself and how it’s intended to work.

My Entrepreneurship Story

Entrepreneurship Story
My roommate and I bought aluminum window shutters to prepare for Irma’s impact, yes, at the time the hurricane was supposed to go right through and across Miami. We were those people who decided to stay, with a couple million others, and ride it out- full impact. I had spent all week trying my best to install all the shutters and looking out for extra water; we could feel the sense of urgency in the streets, people were starting to panic due to the lack of gas, water, and home protection materials.
The day before the storm it was as sunny and beautiful as it gets. A few miles from where we lived was a Home Depot, where we had made our last runs for protection materials and everything was going to close that day at 4pm. We were about to be on our own. Everyone was scrambling to buy anything they could tape to their windows for an added layer of protection, however there was nothing left.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t install all our shutters, Home Depot had already closed, so had every other store around town. At that moment, sitting in our living room, it hit me, we were in the perfect circumstance to go make maximum profit for our extra shutters and get most of our money back while helping people protect themselves last minute. The window of opportunity was until sundown. I had to allocate our resources to make this happen. My roommate’s Camaro had some gas left, enough to take us back to the Home Depot parking lot where desperate people would swing by. We had 8 shutters left, we payed $20 per unit. When we arrived at the parking lot, somebody had beaten us to it and was selling older shutters for $10 dollars each. We wanted people to pay a premium for our new and desired shutters: $40 dollars each.
My roommate was ready to call it quits, our competitor had us beat with his lower prices, I motivated my roommate and we stayed a while longer. Our competitor left before the sun went down, he gave up, we stayed, we had total market control. 15 minutes later a lady comes by with cash and asks how much, we told her, “$40 each.”
She said, “You’re crazy the other guy was charging $10.”
I told her, “The other guy is gone, and our shutters are newer, you’re crazy for not protecting yourself.” She bought every single one, we helped her load her Corolla and she went home, so did we, Irma didn’t hit us. That was my small-time entrepreneurship story, I think, though it’s very small it hits all the principles and mindset to make a good foundation for what entrepreneurship is.

Bug List

ENT3003

Assignment 2A-Bug List

1. Neighbor leaving pieces of trash outside by our walkway.
WHY it exists: He’s busy with work on his way out, always on the phone, or with both hands holding something, like a cigarette or a beer. On his way home from work, it’s usually night time and our neighborhood is very dark so he doesn’t see the trash or notice it.

2. Shooting ranges not allowing steel core ammunition, which happens to be the most affordable practice ammo.
WHY it exists: Indoor shooting ranges trap (back-wall that stops the bullets) can sometimes be of steel themselves or at a angle where when the steel core is likely to ricochet and hit the shooter, creating a hazard. To diminish this risk, the owners decide to ban this type of ammo.

3. Girlfriend leaving items on our bed.
WHY it exists: Her nightstand is full of things already corner to corner and so is her dresser. The only extra room is on top of our mattress.

4. YouTube content creators begging viewers for money donations.
WHY it exists: Somewhere along the line some of my favorite channels went from uploading videos as a hobby to doing it as their full-time job, then YouTube demonetized most of their videos from ad revenue.

5. When I can’t fall asleep before 1am and I need to wake up early the next day.
WHY it exists: The decision to have coffee past noon or when I dare to have coffee past 5pm, the caffeine keeps me up and my sleep pays the price.

6. Celebrity hating, gossip magazines with terrible cover photos sitting there while I wait to pay for groceries.
WHY it exists: They wouldn’t sell otherwise, those magazines are put in locations where people are forced to acknowledge their presence in order to remain relevant.

7. Gridlock style traffic between 5-8pm west/south bound in Miami.
WHY it exists: Everybody is going home from work, over the years Miami has continued to grow, more and more people by the day.

8. Hearing folks do their number two in public restrooms, and smelling it..
WHY it exists: Costs? Installing speakers in restrooms and maybe some odor repellant devices in the toilets might cost the owner more than he is concerned about the experience of the costumers, yet elevator music is very common.

9. Gas doors on cars that read “FUEL.”
WHY it exists: Challengers of yesteryear had that same style logo, so it’s supposed to be an old school spirit thing, not an actual instruction intended
for those who wouldn’t otherwise know what to put there..

10. When indentation lines fall out of order and mess up your document.
WHY it exists: Failure to retain knowledge of various Microsoft word classes can cause this issue to become greater than it is.

11. Bus stops without shelter.
WHY it exists: Budget, the school can’t afford to shelter up every bus stop, or chooses not too, to fund other things, like perhaps more buses!

12. Cracks in the middle of the night in my town home.
WHY it exists: Old properties crack sometimes, especially if the floors are wooden.

13. Highways signs, with different, easy to miss exits and paths to other highways.
WHY it exists: To facilitate travel, reduces traffic and make driving distances shorter we widen our infrastructure and build more ramps and highways.

14. Motorcycle not shifting smoothly.
WHY it exists: Being manual, and a Japanese sport bike, throttle control is   very critical for this machine. Releasing the clutch while simultaneously opening the gas just a hair, requires recurring hand placement and movement to shift perfectly, all while looking out for drivers who don’t see you.

15. Finger prints on gun metal.
WHY it exists: After the proper maintenance and oil application to the surface of a firearm, the surface is wet. Most finishes except bluing are corrosion resistant, but finger prints are going to stick either way if touched without proper gloves.

16. Drivers who speed up to red lights.
WHY it exists: Not everybody is operating a vehicle relaxed or with the same level of experience as others, or they lack a personal concern for fuel economy and common sense.

17. That truck driver doing 85mph on a 70mph speed limit zone.
WHY it exists: The operator is running late for a drop and is willing to risk   getting a ticket and tailgating slower people than manage his time properly, also the owner of the truck isn’t governing the speedometer.

18. Shopping cart traffic inside Walmart aisles.
WHY it exists: Cart sizes, the distance between aisles, plus staggered people who don’t know which product of the 10 offerings to choose from cause this.

19. Automated answering machines that hang up on the caller.
WHY it exists: Lack of operators and the failed attempt of flowing call traffic to the right department.

20. Procrastination stress.
WHY it exists: Lack of self-control. Because of delaying school work or a task due to feeling stressed, while knowing I feel stressed from delaying the school work or task.

Reflection:
This exercise was very interesting, however, after the first five bugs I surprisingly ran out of thoughts and had to give myself time to the let other bugs come up. Then one by one or a few at a time I came up with the rest. I have many more I can think of but it takes time for them to surface. Thinking this way is very effective, it lays the groundworks of what it needs to be fixed once you establish why the bug exists.
